EACH PROJECT BEGINS WITH DEEP CONVERSATIONS with clients, a rigorous study of the unique site, including landscape and community context, and sharing inspiring images with each other to create an overall shared vision of the end goal. We begin design with loose sketches and a free-flowing exchange of ideas, which is developed and supported by the technology that supports our creative process.
MOST OF THE SITES WE DESIGN for are often coastal or rural: ocean, sounds, bays, marshlands, mountains, lakes, and streams. There is a ritual and procession of arrival to these special places. We are incredibly fortunate to be a part of the community of Cape Cod and The South Shore and deeply respect the rich and nuanced histories we design for. We work within the context of many environmental considerations – whether they exist physically on the site or within the larger context.

“We are so pleased — in fact, ecstatic — with the beautiful house designed by Neubauer Ennis. We have been enjoying it sporadically over the last year, and it provides us with much-needed peace, calm and serenity. The team at Neubauer Ennis was able to very deftly celebrate the very best aspects of the site and existing floor plan of a basically good building crying out for help.”

EVERY DECISION WE MAKE is to enable our buildings to endure. We build for the centuries. To design these homes well, we build collaborative teams to support our clients. These teams often include landscape architects, contractors and builders, civil, structural, and mechanical engineers, envelope consultants, and lighting and technology designers and integrators. Our clients are a core member of our team and our role is to enable them to be supported, informed, engaged, and comfortable.

“We are in Brewster for our first weekend of the season. We came up on Thursday and have since acquired a full house of guests. We love the house. It is such a peaceful and unfussy space and it handles everything — and everyone — we throw at it with such grace. It is just a great pleasure to be in it. Many thanks to the Neubauer Ennis team for such a great place.”

OUR STUDIO HAS MADE AN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT to make better decisions for your home and for our environment. Some of the tangible goals we have are to reduce our carbon footprint, favor carbon sequestering insulation products over foam, and design a robust building envelope which works in concert with finely calibrated mechanical systems. We ask where and how products are made, study how they will affect the indoor air quality and their environmental impact so we may share that information with our clients. These goals have been made possible through incredible partnerships with the consultants and contractors who help us carry these goals forward.
We are advocates for our clients and their project through the construction process. With regular, often weekly, site visits throughout construction. We are in lock-step with the general contractor and our deep involvement supports seeing to it that all design decisions are well executed in our clients homes.

“Neubauer Ennis’s role encompasses all aspects of the project, from screening potential builders to working with well-chosen partners, providing a platform for you to bring to bear your experience and expertise in elements as varied as ensuring sustainable use of resources, taking maximum advantage of the natural elements in the setting, designing a healthy building envelope and air exchange system, and selecting materials that tell a “story” both inside and outside. That requires an effective, ongoing relationship with the builder’s team, from the widest focus to the small details. It is, in short, a comprehensive role for clients who want an architectural team that begins with design but carries all the way through to project completion.”

“Above all, thank you for your vision for this home. Over the 3 years, we developed a new appreciation for the work of architects. This summer we really found our rhythm here. This home is living up to all expectations for family gatherings, large and small parties, and day-to-day multigenerational living. Thank you once again to you and Johanna and the NEA staff for making this crazy dream come true. ”
